Decent work across the humanitarian, development and peace nexus in the Arab region
The ILO and the Nexus Academy bring together stakeholders from the Arab region and beyond to boost complementarity, promote decent work principles across the humanitarian, development and peace nexus. The workshop in Amman, Jordan is supported by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).
What is the HDP nexus approach?
The ‘humanitarian-development-peace nexus’ means humanitarian, development and peace actors working together more coherently to meet people’s needs, address the root causes of crises, promote sustainable development, build resilience in fragile and conflict-affected areas, and move toward sustainable peace. This workshop will explore practical solutions to achieving effective collaboration under various frameworks such as the Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP), United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF), National Development Plans, and regional plans like the 3RP.
The role of decent work, with a focus on employment and social protection action in the nexus
During any crisis, addressing employment, labour rights, and social protection, in partnership with governments, employers and workers organisations, as well as UN partners, is critical to enabling affected populations to move away from vulnerability. The ILO guides these efforts, notably through ILO Recommendation No. 205 on Employment and Decent Work for Peace and Resilience (2017).
According to a recent report, ILO work in the Arab region has strategically reinforced efforts towards greater synergies between humanitarian and development action and efficiency, and towards a more explicit contribution to building social cohesion and peace.
