Tea Association of Malawi (TAML) Facilitator's and Learner's Training Manual on Prevention of Workplace Violence and Harassment

Policy document

With support from the Norwegian Government under the ‘Promoting Workers Rights and Gender Equality at Work in Africa' project, the International Labour Organization (ILO) supported Tea Association of Malawi to develop a training manual on prevention of workplace violence and harassment which will assist to create a working environment which is free from sexual harassment and discrimination, where all employees are treated equally with dignity, fairness, and respect; provide equal opportunity in employment for all women and men and both prospective and current employees; communicate the rights and responsibilities of all members and employees of the provisions of the policy; and provide an effective procedure for complaints based on the principles of procedural fairness.

This is a Training Manual on the Prevention of Workplace Violence and Harassment for the Tea Association of Malawi (TAML). The manual was commissioned by ILO and TAML. TAML subscribes to ILO Convention -C190- Violence and Harassment Convention, 2019 (No. 190) and hence is committed to creating a decent work environment and promoting gender equality in the tea industry. TAML and ILO are committed to tackling all forms of violence and harassment in the tea industry. This includes dealing with discrimination, occupational health and safety issues, sexual harassment, and abuse of authority/power.
To achieve this, TAML developed an industry-wide Gender Equality, Harassment and Discrimination policy in 2017 which was adopted by all members of TAML. This is in line with the Gender Equality Act (GEA) 2015 and in keeping with the expectation of the Malawi Human Rights Commission which champions institutions` compliance with the GEA to develop such policies. This Training Manual on the Prevention of Workplace Violence and Harassment supports the TAML Gender Policy and the GEA. TAML and ILO believe that education and training can increase awareness and are key to eliminating workplace violence and harassment hence this manual will support this cause. The capacity building of staff using this manual will step up the creation of a zero-tolerance to violence and harassment workplace in the tea sector.
The development of this training manual underscores the commitment by TAML and its members to a proactively preventing workplace violence and harassment within the tea industry. Through this manual, TAML and ILO aim to bridge awareness gaps among the workforce and cultivate a safer and more respectful work environment.
